The First Annual Merrybrook Preservation Gala. 5 pm. Historians, preservationists, interested citizens, members of state and local government and other honored guests will assemble to mark the 172 birthday anniversary of Civil War heroine Laura Ratcliffe. This exquisite gala will spotlight the urgent need to preserve Ratcliffe's historic home, Merrybrook, which is located in Herndon and is one of the last ante-bellum houses in the area and the only structure associated with the woman who saved the life of John S. Mosby and inspired the devotion of J.E.B. Stuart. The Merrybrook Gala is open to the public. Period dress is welcome but not required. Tickets to the gala are $125 per person, $225 per couple. Presented by Celebrate Fairfax, Inc, the annual festival hosts tens of thousands of visitors during the three-day run. The 25-acre site is magically filled with fascinating sights and sounds as more than 400 exhibitors, vendors, crafters and interactive activities are included in the annual celebration. Celebrate Fairfax! showcases live concerts on six stages, an interactive SciTech Center and ExxonMobil Children's Avenue, great festival foods, and the award winning County Expo program. Washington Balalaika Orchestra (Russian). The Washington Balalaika Society was founded by musicians interested in studying and performing the music of Russia, Ukraine and Eastern Europe on traditional Russian folk instruments -- the balalaika, domra, bayan and related folk wind and percussion.
